 History

Tutoring Nurtures Talent Inc. was founded in November 1991. The founders William and Fannie Brown responded to the request of Rev. Bobby J. Grant who shared that some of his young parishioners needed some assistance with basic reading and math. Due to this call, Dr. Fannie and Mr. William Brown developed a small tutoring program at the New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Preceding this program, Dr. Fannie Brown began the process of becoming a non-profit organization gaining 501 © status.

In its first years, there were fifteen students from Akron, Kent, and Ravenna. The grade levels in reading increased by two grade levels for each student. Math scores increased by one grade level for students in the program. There were some elementary school students solving algebraic equations. Tutoring Nurtures Talent stayed at the New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church location for two years.

In 1993, the program relocated to Akron where it was housed at the St. John CME Church on Hawkins Avenue.  The program met two nights a week, however, it enrollment increased by 50% to 30 students. All 30 participants reading and math scores improved by two grade levels. The program was extremely successful at St. John CME church. Due to work constraints we took a hiatus until the program resumed in 2006.

In 2006, the first class began in January and lasted until May.  The staff were trained under the Youth Education for Tomorrow (YET) Program through Project AGAPE a subsidiary of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio. Currently, there are 40 students enrolled in the program with approximately 30 students receiving direct service.
